The Lucky Hearts Campaign is a strategic partnership between Medic and the Mecklenburg Medical Alliance & Endowment (MMAE), a non-profit that helps support and fund local health initiatives.
The Lucky Hearts Campaign strives to increase bystander CPR during Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) and increase the number of public-use AEDs (Automatic External Defibrillator) within Mecklenburg County.
Since the campaign’s inception, more than 6,000 people have learned CPR and how to use an AED. This includes more than 200 Charlotte-Mecklenburg School employees. The overall campaign goal is to train at least 10,000 people in CPR. The Lucky hearts Campaign has also awarded more than 100 AEDs to approved organizations, government buildings, schools, and other public facilities.
“On behalf of Mount Carmel, I would like to thank Medic for helping us obtain our AED through the Lucky Hearts Campaign. We are now trained to respond to a cardiac emergency within our congregation.” (In April 2014, Mount Carmel Baptist Church received an AED donated by North Carolina State Representative Becky Carney.)
In 2009, Mecklenburg County Representative Becky Carney collapsed on the state house floor and was saved with bystander-performed CPR and the AED that had been donated by her freshman class. Representative Carney decided to pay forward the gift of a second chance at life and joined the Lucky Hearts Campaign. The Becky Carney Initiative will donate a total of 20 AEDs to houses of worship in Mecklenburg County.
